My class was so excited when the boxes arrived and we were able to take the boxes of cereal that were donated to the collection point in the school library- with the donations that we received, we almost doubled what our school had collected at that point! Though I had to keep some kids from digging into their favorites (joking!) they had a lot of pride in being able to provide the same cereal they love to eat to kids in our community that are more food-insecure. It was a powerful experience for them to develop this community service project, organize it, advertise it with posters around the school and reminders on the morning announcements, and finally collect the boxes. \r\n\r\nSince I teach 7th grade, my students will still have another year in our school and are already talking about having a similar cereal drive next year. So often, they participate in food drives that teachers/administrators plan, their parents buy for and they just hand the food over for the cause chosen. This project gave them an opportunity to take charge and work at making a difference in a way that was meaningful for them.","fullyFundedDate":1764965998482,"projectUrl":"project/student-led-project-to-end-hunger/9945355/","projectTitle":"Student Led Project to End Hunger","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ryan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9829014"},{"teacherId":6831665,"projectId":9349271,"letterContent":"Thank you for donating to our project. Seeing that shift in effort and confidence has been really powerful.\r\n\r\nWhen I first showed students the prizes, they were so excited and immediately started asking what they needed to do to earn them. That excitement has carried over into their daily work. Students are more focused, more willing to try, and more likely to stick with something even when it's challenging. The prizes have given them a reason to push through the hard parts, and they are starting to feel proud of their progress.\r\n\r\nAs we keep going, my goal is to help students build stronger reading habits and start seeing themselves as readers. The STARI texts are intentionally designed to build foundational literacy skills while honoring the fact that middle school students want stories that feel relevant and mature. Through these books, students are strengthening decoding skills, expanding academic and content vocabulary, increasing reading fluency, and practicing comprehension strategies such as summarizing, questioning, making inferences, and citing evidence from the text. These lessons are carefully structured so students experience success daily, which is essential for rebuilding confidence after years of reading struggles.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks very different now. Instead of avoidance and frustration, I see students leaning in, following along, discussing characters, and even asking to continue reading. We read in small groups, engage in partner discussions, annotate key passages, and track our thinking as we go. Students practice fluency aloud in supportive settings, and they celebrate measurable growth in words read correctly and comprehension checks. The multicultural themes in these stories have sparked powerful conversations, allowing students to connect their own lives and experiences to what they read.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting changes has been watching reluctant readers begin to identify themselves as readers. I have students who previously avoided books now volunteering to read aloud or share their thinking. A few students who struggled silently are now participating in discussions because the texts feel accessible and relatable.
