With enough materials for everyone to practice at the same time, we've been able to work on steady beat, and reading simple patterns as a full class. One of my favorite moments so far was watching small groups create their own simple rhythms and then perform them for their peers—students played with confidence, eager to share what they created!\r\n\r\nWhen we opened up the e boxes of pads and sticks, they erupted with excitement. Several immediately asked, \"can we use these now?\" The room buzzed with curiosity as they tested out the feel of the sticks and pads, tapped out their first rhythms, and encouraged each other to drum.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, we're now moving into our next steps: learning to play in small ensembles and play rhythms together. Students will be composing their own short percussion pieces, practicing collaboration, timing, and creativity. These materials have opened the door to a meaningful, hands-on music experience that my students look forward to every day. Children often need a quiet space to process their emotions and regulate themselves, and your donations have provided just that. The vibrant SEL posters visualize healthy coping strategies and feelings, empowering students to identify and manage their emotions more effectively. The mindful fidgets offer a safe and discreet way for students to release excess energy or focus their attention, helping them return to learning feeling refreshed and ready. The sand timers have also been particularly helpful in teaching self-regulation, allowing students to manage their time independently in the calm-down corner before rejoining classroom activities.\r\n\r\nI have already witnessed countless instances of students utilizing this space to de-escalate difficult moments, practice self-awareness, and return to their learning with renewed focus. Because of your generosity—and thanks to the support of the Hawaii State Department of Education and Marc & Lynne Benioff—my fifth grade students now have access to both the tools and the environment they need to thrive during a pivotal time in their learning journey.\r\n\r\nThis project had a powerful impact on my students' ability to regulate their emotions, stay focused, and feel ownership of our learning space. The \"mental health first aid kit\" gave students a wide variety of sensory tools—like stress balls, scent putty, sand timers, and kickbands—which allowed them to choose what helped them feel calm, grounded, and ready to learn. One high-energy student told me they loved using the kickband and asked if they could keep it on their chair during tests. Another student shared, after just one day, that they already felt it was helping them. These small moments added up to a big shift: students felt more empowered to manage their emotions and learning.\r\n\r\nAt the same time, the cleaning supplies we received—like the mop, carpet sweeper, and dustpan set—helped us foster a culture of care and responsibility. Students jumped at the chance to clean up, often without being asked. I was able to use these tools to teach life skills that helped create a calm, organized classroom where everyone could feel more focused and respected.\r\n\r\nBecause of this project, I was able to teach self-regulation, executive functioning, and real-world responsibility alongside academics. The calm, clean, and caring environment supported deeper learning, stronger student relationships, and a smoother transition as students prepare to leave elementary school and enter middle school.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping make this possible. The students that completed their whole chart got to choose a prize from our reward box. One student, who had been struggling with reaching their goals, was determined to complete their chart. They spent extra time completing iReady on their free time and at home, and their improvement was remarkable. When they finished and chose a prize, they were beaming with pride. It was a powerful moment that showed how positive reinforcement can drive academic growth.\r\n\r\nWhen we opened the boxes my students' reactions were pure joy! The Legos were an instant favorite, of course. The construction paper, paints, dot markers, and rock painting supplies added an element of artistic expression that they really appreciated. They were excited to have so many different materials to work with, and they immediately started brainstorming ideas. There was a sense of excitement and exploration in the air. \r\n\r\nWe'll also be using the Legos to create timelines of events from the books we are reading.
