My vision has always been to make my resource room a safe, welcoming haven for all students in our building—whether they need academic support, a sensory break, or a basic necessity. Thanks to you, that vision is a reality.\r\nThe LEGOs have become a vital part of our sensory wall. The LEGO building station is an absolute favorite destination for my older elementary students—especially the boys—when they need a quick brain break to reset and recharge before heading back to class. \r\n\r\nThe new bookshelves have completely transformed our school's Care Closet. Because my room is located right next to the upper elementary classrooms and the restrooms, it is perfectly situated for students who are beginning to go through puberty. Before your donation, a student who needed a hygiene product had to walk downstairs, cross the entire building, and wait in the main office to see the nurse or social worker. \r\nNow, because my room has a constant stream of students coming and going for resource time, there is absolutely no stigma attached to walking in.\r\nOur Care Closet is set up beautifully, fully labeled, and out in the open. Students can walk in, look at the labels, and independently grab exactly what they need—no questions asked. It provides them with immediate access to crucial items, including:\r\n\r\n-Hygiene Basics: Deodorant for boys and girls, lotion, and chapstick.\r\n-Dental Care: Toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss picks.\r\n-Hair Care: Combs, brushes, hair ties, bows, and a mirror to fix late-morning bedhead.\r\n-Menstrual Support: Sanitary products and cleansing wipes for girls navigating their cycles.\r\n\r\nTo completely normalize using these supplies, I have even asked our teachers to use the Care Closet openly. They share stories with the kids about times they forgot their own deodorant or got food stuck in their teeth, proving to the students that these are normal human needs and it is completely okay to need a helping hand. \r\nThe impact on student dignity and instructional time has been immediate. Just this week, several students have popped in. They usually make eye contact, point to the closet, and I give them a quick thumbs-up. They grab what they need and head straight to the bathroom next door. Their self-esteem and integrity remain entirely intact, and lost instructional time has decreased dramatically. \r\n\r\nYour generosity did not just buy plastic bricks and wooden shelves; you purchased comfort, dignity, and instructional hours for children who need them most. While I have accumulated many resources over the years to make learning fun and accessible, I had nowhere to keep them. I share a classroom with a partner teacher who uses a row of bookshelves to create a visual divider between our spaces, giving the room the feel of two distinct learning environments while offering ample storage. I knew immediately that this was the ideal solution for my space as well.\r\n\r\nI initially searched thrift stores like Goodwill, but I could not find anything functional within my personal budget. When a few colleagues recommended DonorsChoose, I was hesitant—years ago, I posted a $100 project and received only a single $20 donation. I could not imagine having a project totaling nearly $800 fully funded.\r\n\r\nYet, thanks to you, we did it!\r\n\r\nThese bookshelves have transformed our daily routines. Having an organized turn in system has helped papers stay organized, which has saved me time while grading, and helped ensure the forms that students turn in don't get lost among other papers.\r\n\r\nSince I set up the mailbox over the summer, my current students have not seen my classroom without it. However, I explained to them that it was new, and that my students last year did not have a mailbox. I told them about how hard it was to pass out papers without a mailbox, and how it was easy for me to forget to hand out important papers. They were thankful to have a mailbox so these aren't problems anymore.
