Students are learning to identify features like government control, loss of personal freedoms, and the struggle of individuals to resist conformity—all while making meaningful connections to the world around them.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks like students leaning over their books with highlighters in hand, eagerly marking passages that show elements of dystopian societies. They discuss their findings in small groups, debating which evidence best supports their claims. For many, this is the first time they've felt truly confident explaining their thinking with direct support from the text. One group was especially animated as they compared how The Giver and Scythe each show the costs of a \"perfect\" society, backing up their ideas with strong quotes.\r\n\r\nThe additional resources have also made a huge difference in creating a welcoming space. The soft lighting, new chairs, and fans have helped turn our classroom into a place where students feel calm, safe, and ready to learn. Instead of worrying about the heat or feeling uncomfortable, they can focus fully on their reading and learning.
