Through the Touchdown for Teachers grant, we received professional-quality microphones, and my students have already begun to transform the way they rehearse, perform, and grow as musicians. \r\n\r\nOver the past few years, our choir program has steadily built momentum. Since the pandemic, the John Jay Choir has been guided by several directors, and this is now my second year leading the program. What began as a small, developing ensemble has grown into a vibrant, student-centered community where singers support one another, take pride in their work, and strive for excellence. Many of our students come from backgrounds where access to high-quality arts resources is limited; however, they show up each day ready to sing, collaborate, and challenge themselves musically. Their commitment has been unwavering, and now, thanks to you, their sound can truly reflect their dedication.\r\n\r\nThese microphones are already making a meaningful impact on our performances. As we continue to grow, developing ensemble balance and blend remains a critical focus. Ensuring that each voice part is heard without overpowering the ensemble, and that vowels and timbres align cohesively, has become significantly more attainable with these tools. Students can now hear themselves and one another with greater clarity, allowing them to engage their aural skills and independently identify and correct musical discrepancies. Students who were once hesitant now sing with increased confidence, knowing their voice is valued and essential to the collective sound. Additionally, we are using the microphones to create recordings that enable students to reflect on their progress, prepare for contests, and begin building portfolios for future musical opportunities.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these microphones open doors to projects that were previously out of reach. We plan to record concert performances, facilitate student-led recording sessions, and introduce foundational audio production concepts so students can learn not only how to perform music, but also how to capture and share it. Our 2026–2027 concert season, Reflections of Us, will feature several collaborative and thematic performances made possible by this new equipment. These include a showcase of 2000s popular music with a live band, a concert highlighting winter holidays and cultural celebrations from around the world, a contest program honoring African American composers and their contributions to the choral arts, and a culminating performance of Shelter Me: A Rock Oratorio, a semi-staged production exploring one man's experience with homelessness and the ways empathy, action, and understanding can amplify our collective voice. Most importantly, your support has affirmed something deeply meaningful for our students: that their voices matter. In a Title I community where resources are often limited, your generosity sends a powerful message that their artistry, effort, and potential are worthy of investment.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in our students and in the power of music education. Your impact will resonate in every rehearsal, every performance, and every confident voice that rises from our choir room.","fullyFundedDate":1765147184720,"projectUrl":"project/micing-the-mustang-choir/9947865/","projectTitle":"Mic'ing the Mustang Choir","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Fabian","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10376635"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_13728","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2102,"numTeachers":195,"percentFrplEligible":80,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":6,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":85,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"10.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.1,"schoolId":13728,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about John Jay High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"John Jay High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/northside-independent-school-district/john-jay-high-school/13728"}
