Not only has it helped them engage deeply and connect in really meaningful ways, they've found the themes of growing up and overcoming one's fears to be really powerful. \r\n Knowing that there is light on the other side of middle school can be really healing and comforting; my students are all 6th graders and it is allowing a lot of them to know they are not alone if the journey has seemed difficult at times. It has also helped our students think about ways they can support each other more in being kind to one another, and \"Be Kind\" is our school motto. \r\n Hearing the students read this book aloud to each other in groups, being expressive, and delighted by the humor, and actively discussing the topics that come up has been a wonderful experience for our students. It's also allowing them to work on many of their ELA skills outside of the ELA classroom, taking some of the pressure off, and allowing them to enjoy aspects of analysis, including exploring themes, character traits and other aspects of text in a way that feels organic. \r\n Thank-you so much for allowing us to have and utilize this book with so many students; it means so much and goes such a long way!!!","fullyFundedDate":1758812680160,"projectUrl":"project/graphic-novel-class-set/9713328/","projectTitle":"Graphic Novel Class Set","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Pokrovski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10260543_orig.png?crop=537,537,x169,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757885435044","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10260543"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61805","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":635,"numTeachers":54,"percentFrplEligible":75,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":47,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":69.6,"schoolId":61805,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about John F Kennedy Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"John F Kennedy Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/waltham-public-schools/john-f-kennedy-middle-school/61805"}
