I decided that the best way to use the snacks from this project was to create an incentive system for my students. The way it works is that each week, each of my 5 sections competes to see whose behavior and participation is best. They get a daily score that is added to a tracker, and at the end of the week the class with the highest average wins a prize. Each section also has their own prize tracker that is displayed so that they know what they are working towards. I also will use the snacks to reward students for doing well on for some of the more competitive activities in my class, like Kahoot reviews or Game Show style lessons. I've also had students share that they are hungry or did not eat lunch that day, and I feel more at ease being able to provide them a snack that can keep them energized. \r\n\r\nStudents were excited when I rolled out the tracker, especially when they saw that cookies and chips were included. I keep the tracker positive by not including low scores when they have the occasional hard day. The snacks have been particularly helpful in celebrating classes that may have started the year rough, but have begun to improve. For example, I have one class that is a dual language class that can be really chatty and distracted, but they've been consistently focused for the past couple of weeks. It brought the whole class, myself included, so much joy to be able to celebrate their progress with some gummy snacks. \r\n\r\nThe only obstacle with this incentive system is that I have one class in particular that consistently outperforms the other classes in terms of behaviors and academics. As such, I have a rule that no class can win in consecutive weeks, which prevents the other classes from feeling discouraged. In the future, I plan to randomly change some of the rules for a week. For example, perhaps I can reward the top two classes one week instead of one. Or maybe I can have a day where any class that earns a 4, the highest score, earns a prize for that day. Adding this randomized rule changes will continue to strengthen the academic culture in my classroom and bring some joy to my students days. \r\n\r\nThank you again for being able to make this Incentive system a reality. As a teacher, I appreciate the opportunity to be able to celebrate all of the hard work and growth that students exhibit on a daily basis.","fullyFundedDate":1758812373402,"projectUrl":"project/snacking-scientists-keeping-students-en/9434639/","projectTitle":"Snacking Scientists: Keeping Students Energized!","teacherDisplayName":"Mx. While many donors may think of printing as a simple task, having reliable access to printed materials is essential for our students' learning. With fresh ink, I'm able to provide clear, high-quality worksheets, graphic organizers, reference guides, and individualized supports that students can hold, annotate, and use throughout their lessons. This has been especially valuable for students who learn best with visual aids or who benefit from having step-by-step scaffolds right in front of them.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is having materials that feel accessible and tailored to them. They love receiving printed resources that they can write on, highlight, or use during small-group work. Whether it's practice problems, reading passages, or diagrams, the printed materials help students stay engaged and organized. It also allows us to produce color-coded supports, which many students find helpful for understanding complex concepts.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have particularly benefited from having consistent printed resources. Some who struggle with executive functioning now have clear, printed checklists and guides that help them stay on track. Others who need extra practice can take home printed review sheets without waiting or worrying about low ink. Even students who prefer hands-on learning are more confident and focused because they have materials that support their thinking.
