I don't think we can necessarily \"teach\" kids to love reading, however we can guide and encourage them. Half the battle is having the right books. Trends and what is popular is shifting constantly, so therefore keeping a classroom library relevant and interesting to students can be a challenge and a financial expense. When we are able to have engaging, exciting books around the classroom and constantly having them available, it excites kids and makes them want to read. Having a display, having book talks, and showcasing a book are a few ways we can encourage that love of reading.\r\n\r\nWe have once a week full period of independent reading and within that school week we have 20 minutes dispersed of free choice reading time as well.","fullyFundedDate":1744200282424,"projectUrl":"project/more-books-for-my-eager-middle-schoolers/9062811/","projectTitle":"More Books for my Eager Middle Schoolers!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Giarratano","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3309836_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1457956845968","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3309836"},{"teacherId":6576630,"projectId":8871104,"letterContent":"Thank you to the Con Edison and Amazon Future Engineers funding my project! \r\n\r\nMy students were extremely enthusiastic to use the new hand cranks to observe how mechanical energy transfers and converts into radiant energy produced by the light bulb. Having this experience helped them brainstorm ways we can use human energy to keep devices charged in emergency situations where there is no power. As we start the Weather Patterns Unit, they have been super fascinated with the live data from the weather station in comparison to the weather they see out the window. This instrument is adding a new sense of wonder and relevance to this topic. I can't wait to have students use the weather station to investigate daily weather conditions near our school, such as air pressure and temperature, and act like meteorologists to predict future weather. \r\n\r\nI am looking forward to using the magnetic field demonstrator when we discuss non-touch forces. We rely on these thermometers in so many experiments like measuring the rate of temperature change of different substances. This along with the lamps that we received will guide them to explore how latitude/sunlight angle affects climate conditions. I have also used the batteries for our classroom timer and tornado model to observe how this extreme weather forms. \r\n\r\nI am looking forward to having students use the solar panels and lamps to design renewable energy solutions later on it in the year.
