When students need a moment to regroup, they can come in and choose what will help them reset: they may color, enjoy a snack, read quietly in our library center, or simply take a few minutes to breathe and regroup before returning to class.\r\n\r\nThe students were especially excited when they saw the snacks, refrigerator, and microwave. Something as simple as being able to choose a snack has made the space feel more inviting and caring. The dry erase markers have also given students another way to express themselves, reflect, and engage while they are in the space.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments has been watching students make positive choices about what they need when they are upset or overwhelmed. Instead of viewing the office as a place where they are sent because they are in trouble, they are learning that it can be a place where they can pause, reset, and get ready to try again. During math, all students are able to have their own individual white boards on the carpet to stay engaged. Students who are able to complete their work are able to transfer their work to a standing white board table and present their work to their class. This has also been a great way to show misconceptions and common areas and correct them as a class. \r\n\r\nOnce students realized the opportunity to have brand new white boards, standing white boards and their own magnetic letter sets, their excitement skyrocketed. They are eager to participate and show their work on their own so they can be chosen to show their work on the standing white boards. Using the white boards as a team to compete is speed facts, writing words, responding to answers has been an additional bonus for them all! \r\n\r\nThank you for everything that was able to happen because of your generosity and belief in my kids and me as a teacher.
