I wanted to share with you how this project has impacted both my teaching and my classroom since your generosity made it possible.\r\n\r\nThese texts introduced me to a more intentional way of thinking about classroom community and I'm already planning how to bring two specific practices into my room this year:\r\n\r\nCommunity Circles: regular, low-stakes check-in circles where students sit facing each other and respond to a shared prompt - building trust and connection before conflict happens, not just after. \r\n\r\nRestorative conversations: a structures set of questions that replace traditional discipline with a process focused on accountability and repair. \r\n\r\nBoth shift from punishing behavior to rebuilding relationships - something I'm genuinely excited to put into practice. Thank you for investing in a different way of building community in my classroom. You have helped me learn not just academics, but how to repair, reflect and grow alongside one another.","fullyFundedDate":1778608170595,"projectUrl":"project/teachers-are-still-students-at-heart/10168609/","projectTitle":"Teachers Are Still Students at Heart","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Logan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3590248_orig.jpg?crop=887,887,x116,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1640749352349","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/toni-logan"},{"teacherId":3590248,"projectId":10117340,"letterContent":"Thank you again for funding How Learning Works! I wanted to share how much this resource has already shaped my teaching. I have been working through the book's core principles on how students build and connect knowledge, and I'm putting them into practice right away. As I plan lessons for this new school year, I have modified some teaching strategies to adjust less to covering content and more about how students actually absorb and retain it. I am building more time into peer opportunities for teaching and collaboration. \r\n\r\nLooking ahead, I'm excited to keep developing my skills in building musicians that want to carry-over into the high school program. It makes my heart happy to see so many of my students continue to play in high school, and my intention is to increase the retention rates of the music program; without sacrificing quality or expectations. \r\n\r\nNone of this would have been possible without your generosity. The arrival of these new resources—especially the Chromebook chargers and outlet extensions—has completely transformed the rhythm and flow of our daily learning. In a modern classroom, tech is a seamless part of how students collaborate, research, and demonstrate their understanding. However, that learning quickly grinds to a halt when a device dies halfway through a lesson. Before your donation, a low battery meant a student was tethered to a single, distant wall outlet, isolated from their peers. Now, with our new charging station setup, students can power up right at their desks, keeping their focus entirely on their schoolwork rather than worrying about a dying screen.\r\n\r\nBeyond the digital tools, the individual whiteboards have brought a wave of fresh energy and excitement into our everyday routines. My students were absolutely thrilled to get their hands on them; there is something uniquely motivating about being able to quickly sketch out an answer, wipe it away, and try again without the fear of making a permanent mistake on paper. It has turned math practice and grammar drills into an interactive game. This combination of reliable technology and hands-on tools has created a much more dynamic, resilient classroom environment where no student is left waiting on the sidelines.\r\n\r\nThis project has been especially impactful for a few of my quieter students who used to hesitate to speak up during whole-class discussions. Having their own whiteboards allows them to confidently participate and show me their answers from their desks, giving them a safe space to find their voice. At the same time, my tech-enthusiastic students have taken great pride in managing our new charging hub, learning a bit of responsibility while ensuring their peers stay connected. Your kindness has not only provided us with essential supplies, but it has also built a more inclusive, efficient, and joyful space for us to learn every day. The new xylophone was such an exciting addition to our class that it was almost a distraction to the class; everyone wanted to touch it and play on it, including students that didn't play in the percussion section. \r\n\r\nThe new instrument sounds so much more resonate than our older xylophone; but we still use both for learning purposes. Having both xylophones allows more students to practice at the same time. This is especially important for learning as well as classroom management. Your generosity has made a tangible and positive difference in the daily learning experience of our students.\r\n\r\nHere is a breakdown of the impact these essential items have had:\r\n\r\n-Whiteboards & Whiteboard Markers: This combination has revolutionized our approach to practice and formative assessment. Instead of working problems on scratch paper, students now use individual whiteboards and dry-erase markers for quick, low-stakes problem-solving. This allows me to immediately see their work, provide instant feedback, and correct misconceptions on the spot. The high-quality markers mean less time spent struggling with fading ink and more time focused on math.\r\n\r\n-Quadratic Whiteboards: These specialized boards are a game-changer for our algebra units. With a pre-printed coordinate grid, they have made graphing linear, exponential, and especially quadratic functions much faster and more accurate. Students can easily visualize the vertex, axis of symmetry, and intercepts, greatly improving their understanding of function transformations.\r\n\r\n-Cardstock Paper: We've been able to create durable, reusable, and manipulative materials that are vital for abstract concepts. This paper is used for printing math tools like unit circles, geometry templates, and task cards, making them robust enough to be used by multiple classes year after year.\r\n\r\n-Tape: A simple but crucial tool! The tape is used daily for hanging anchor charts, displaying student-made graphs, and quickly securing manipulatives for group work. It helps us keep the classroom environment organized and visually supportive of the current math topics.\r\n\r\n-Lysol Wipes: Keeping our shared learning tools clean is vital. The Lysol wipes ensure that our whiteboards and desks are hygienic for every class period. This is especially important for the individual whiteboards, which are handled by many students throughout the day, helping to maintain a healthy learning environment.\r\n\r\nYour support directly translates into a more interactive, clean, and resource-rich environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and engaging actively with mathematical concepts.
