Your generosity has brought a new collection of 37 nonfiction titles into our classroom. These books offer students in grades nine through twelve engaging ways to explore real people, ideas, and events.\r\n\r\nI introduced the collection with a Book Tasting activity for former and future AP Language students, as my next session of AP Lang doesn't start until January. I was thrilled that students responded to their invitations, and they seemed to enjoy the Book Tasting party! The books will also be part of First Chapter Fridays, when I read a book's first chapter or a short excerpt to hook readers, a favorite activity students have missed and loved. You never outgrow storytime. For an independent study project, each student will choose a nonfiction book from the collection and create a physical model that \"dissects\" the book's argument in order to practice rhetorical analysis. Thanks to you, students have a wonderful variety to choose from as they practice identifying central ideas, examining evidence and claims, considering an author's purpose and possible bias, reading closely, annotating important passages, and supporting their own arguments with evidence from the text.\r\n\r\nIt's rare to find a high school classroom perfectly quiet and engaged, but during our Book Tasting, that's exactly what happened. It was the Friday before Halloween, a spooky fireplace video played on the TV, and I dimmed the lights so students could read by \"candlelight.\" Afterward, one student asked if she could check a book out of the classroom library because she couldn't stop thinking about it. (The answer is yes!) Another student told me how much they loved First Chapter Fridays in AP Lang and how much they missed them. Now I have plenty of quality nonfiction to share with my students. Thank you sincerely for investing in our classroom and helping students discover nonfiction books they want to read.","fullyFundedDate":1787585264737,"projectUrl":"project/facing-the-facts-helping-students-engag/10454903/","projectTitle":"Facing the Facts: Helping Students Engage with Nonfiction","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hofman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3012520_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1786063586581","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jordon-hofman"},{"teacherId":10537198,"projectId":10349853,"letterContent":"My students are using our new chemistry resources to explore scientific concepts through hands-on learning and discovery.
