Every child learns differently, and providing a variety of seating options allows students to choose spaces where they feel most comfortable, focused, and successful. Whether students are using wobble stools, floor cushions, lap desks, or alternative seating arrangements, they are more motivated and better able to concentrate on their learning tasks throughout the day.\r\n\r\nIn my fourth-grade classroom, flexible seating encourages collaboration, independence, and student ownership of learning. Students are given opportunities to make responsible choices about where and how they work best, which helps build confidence and accountability. Many students who struggle with staying focused in traditional desks benefit greatly from movement-friendly seating that supports their individual learning needs. As a result, I have seen increased participation, improved behavior, and stronger engagement during lessons and group activities.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, flexible seating helps create a positive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel valued, comfortable, and ready to learn. By creating spaces that support both academic and social-emotional growth, my students are developing important skills such as communication, self-regulation, and problem-solving. Flexible seating is more than just furniture—it is a meaningful tool that helps students thrive both academically and personally every day.","fullyFundedDate":1778065216287,"projectUrl":"project/flexible-seating-for-flexible-learners/10245224/","projectTitle":"Flexible Seating for Flexible Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Brassart","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4661140_orig.jpg?crop=481,481,x0,y44&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1777589525446","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kbrassart"},{"teacherId":301162,"projectId":9993235,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your incredible generosity in funding our classroom library project. Our old copies were worn, marked up, and honestly... a little discouraging to pick up. Now, my students are holding books that feel important, current, and worthy of their attention—and that shift changes everything.\r\nStories like Blended and I Am Malala open the door to meaningful conversations about identity, resilience, and perspective—and now every student has a copy they're proud to read.\r\nYour donation didn't just replace old books; it helped create a classroom environment where students feel valued and engaged. My students are determined and working hard to fill the gaps in their mathematical understanding. Your generous donation of notebooks, math curriculum, and lamination pages has helped my students to reach their goals. \r\n\r\nFor the past several years, my students have completed the overwhelming majority of math on computers. This has made it difficult for them to annotate, highlight, and show their full work and thought process. By providing them with paper resources, my students are able to write out all their steps, review their work without scrolling and opening tabs, and easily reference past work to help guide them in moving forward. As a teacher, seeing their work on paper and not on a screen is extremely helpful in identifying where they understand the concept and where they are making mistakes. \r\n\r\nThe lamination sheets have been incredibly helpful! I have laminated factor charts, multiplication charts, and reference sheets. Your gracious donations of board games are being used daily by my students to learn probability, strategy, and cooperation. Each week, we focus on a different category of game and strategy. The games that have been most exciting are those that focus on strategic moves, games such as Reversi, Mancala, checkers, and chess. Two of my students enjoyed learning and playing Mancala so much, that they made their own board with small Dixie cups and used pennies as game pieces. Other students have started bringing friends in during lunch so they can play outside of class. \r\n\r\nWe start each class with a game already in play projected on the board and students discuss the next possible moves and opponent moves. When playing dominoes, students determined the best possible play in order to score points by counts of five (5, 10, 15...), and how to ensure their opponents are blocked from play by keeping track of the numbers in play. In just three weeks of school, I have seen their strategies and explanations improve and grow. Students challenge me in games daily, and I am thrilled (and a bit sheepish) to say that they are starting to beat me.\r\n\r\nIn addition to determining strategy and probability, students have learned how to read and follow game instructions, which can often be quite lengthy. Students who were once reluctant to even begin reading the instructions have now started reading them aloud to their group to determine if a rule was broken or a play was fair. I regularly hear \"I told you so!\" and see group members pointing to specific rules of game play in instructions. \r\n\r\nThank you again for providing my students the opportunity to learn and have fun at the same time!","fullyFundedDate":1746912599082,"projectUrl":"project/game-plan-to-teach-strategy-and-probabi/9292201/","projectTitle":"Game Plan: to Teach Strategy and Probability Through Board Games!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Sain","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3242467_orig.jpg?crop=328,328,x98,y98&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1734374846166","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sainmath"},{"teacherId":4661140,"projectId":8836980,"letterContent":"Engaging students early in their learning journey with a variety of novels and genres is a powerful pedagogical tool that strengthens students' cognitive abilities, language skills, and academic performance. Reading across genres—such as historical fiction, fantasy, mysteries, and biographies—exposes students to diverse vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and unique text features. This variety helps students move beyond basic comprehension to develop critical thinking skills by analyzing character motivations, navigating intricate plots, and evaluating a variety of thematic content that they may not be aware of . Exposure to different fictional worlds acts as a mental workout, improving focus and strengthening connections between brain areas, which prepares students for more challenging analytical tasks.\r\n\r\nAs teachers we must think beyond academic performance, as literature is crucial for social-emotional growth, fostering empathy by allowing students to explore the lives, feelings, and perspectives of others. Novels give us this opportunity! They provide a safe, simulated environment for students to \"try on\" different experiences, helping them understand complex emotions and diverse cultures, which in turn reduces prejudice. Reading not only builds strong readers, but it allows our students to gain insights into human nature and develop emotional intelligence, providing them with wisdom and resilience applicable to their own lives.
