As of now, so much has already happened in music class with our classroom set of keyboards. I first need to make clear that when I told my older students that we'd been gifted the pianos, they CHEERED! They're truly so excited to learn to play, and their excitement manifested in some of the most focused behavior and responsiveness I've ever seen from my fifth graders.\r\nAfter establishing the basics, we began working on high-reward, achievable warm ups and songs to lay the foundation for our piano classes. Providing students a way to feel immediately successful paves the way to a more confident learning experience, and it was truly wild to see how quickly their warm-ups became memorized phrases that they'd string together to make arrangements.\r\nIn just a few classes, my fifth graders began experimenting with familiar music and several recreated melodies they knew by ear. The ability to reproduce a song they already love is SO fun for my students, and it bridges the divide between skill acquisition and personal creativity. After maybe four classes, a student played for me a melody he'd learned by ear, and a week later he performed it at our school's winter talent show. \r\nOutside of class, some students have asked to stay in for recess to play piano for fun (I can't say no) and we've used keyboards to support students who receive occupational therapy. In very little time, these colorful pianos have become an important part of the Inquiry enrichment experience.\r\nThank you, thank you, thank you for your generosity and for showing my students some love. Kiddos need to learn skills to regulate so that they can be productive in all aspects of their lives. My students all comply with uniform policy now! I greatly appreciate all that was donated to us. Students now never need to worry about being in uniform. Students have done such a great job taking care of their new sweatshirts.
