These texts have allowed us to focus on essential reading skills such as decoding, sight word recognition, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies like identifying main ideas, making inferences, and connecting text to personal experiences. The stories are culturally inclusive and relatable, which makes it easier for students—many of whom are refugees and immigrants—to engage with the material and see themselves as successful readers.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is interactive and collaborative. We practice together through read-alouds, partner reading, and guided practice in small groups. Students discuss characters and themes, predict what might happen next, and share how the text connects to their own lives. This active engagement not only builds literacy skills but also strengthens speaking and listening abilities, which are critical for daily life and work.\r\n\r\nSome students have taken a special interest in the new books. One student, who once struggled to read even a few sentences aloud, now confidently volunteers to read to the class. Another has been borrowing books to read at home with her children, creating shared learning moments for the whole family. These materials have turned reading into something my students look forward to—a time of connection, discovery, and accomplishment.","fullyFundedDate":1666287505210,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-adult-refugees-and-immigrants-t/6691148/","projectTitle":"Teaching Adult Refugees and Immigrants to Read in English","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Christenson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1920822_orig.jpg?crop=960,960,x0,y131&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1661360289276","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1920822"},{"teacherId":1920822,"projectId":6756844,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping put high-quality, meaningful books into the hands of my adult English learners—students who are refugees, immigrants, and lifelong learners determined to improve their skills.
