They are learning how to lead their own inquiries—using the encyclopedic format to find answers to their own questions, the glossary and index for learning more about words we already know, whether they are curious about how a train engine works or what children in other countries wear for celebrations. Because of your generosity, we received full funding for our project, which provided 20 copies of Lord of the Flies (the students loved reading them), three iPad stand holders for recording, and classroom snacks that helped a lot of students with food insecurity attend class. With these purchases taken care of, my co-teacher and I were also able to contribute graphic novels of Lord of the Flies, which we couldn't have afforded otherwise, that really helped students with comprehension and engagement.\r\n\r\nWhat this has done for our students:\r\n\r\nThe texts helped us analyze for theme and character development, making text-to-text and text-to-self connections, and using visual literacy strategies with graphic novels to support comprehension. We were able to deepen students' understanding of the theme of our course: survival. Students chose moments from the text to exemplify how survival could be physical, emotional, and identity-based, and explored individual versus group dynamics in survival situations.\r\n\r\nStudents were then able to record these responses clearly and easily using their new iPad stands. These have become so popular that students come in to borrow them for other classes! They have removed a simple yet impactful barrier to equitable literacy for our sign language-based classroom. \r\n\r\nReluctant readers and visual learners have especially flourished with the graphic novels paired with the main text — they're more confident discussing themes and producing polished videos that show genuine understanding.\r\n\r\nThe students have already been asking regularly about The Odyssey graphic novels that we will begin reading in February. They are hungry for more literature! The 40 books that we were able to purchase because of your donations will continue to engage more young, Deaf students for years to come.\r\n\r\nThank you for making these experiences possible.
