I know that middle school is often when kids begin to dislike reading, and I wanted to make sure I facilitated a different experience for students, but I wasn't sure how to do that --- especially considering I did not have many books for students to read.\r\n\r\nI turned to DonorsChoose in hopes that others would feel passionate about providing books to students, but I was blown away by the support I received. Countless studies have presented the benefits of reading on students' mental health, empathy, and academic performance, but I doubt most of you donated because you read one of these studies. Instead, I imagine you remembered a book you loved in middle school and wanted to gift that experience to another child.\r\n\r\nWith your support, I was able to stock my library with highly engaging books, many of which feature main characters of various backgrounds. In St. Louis, a beautifully multicultural city with a long history of racism, my students search for books where they can learn about others and feel validated in their own experiences. My students can now design and create products within the timeframe of a single class. Once their product is completed, students can immediately receive feedback from prospective buyers. This allows them to make quick changes and bring a product or prototype to the market or investors. \r\nStudents are amazed to see their ideas come into reality and see them being printed in little or no time at all.
