One of my favorite moments was watching students work together to figure out how to turn the small pieces into everything from animals and buildings to vehicles and completely original inventions.\r\nThe Plus-Plus blocks have quickly become a favorite because there are so many possibilities for creativity. Students can write, erase, and revise their work without worrying about making mistakes, which has encouraged them to take more risks and practice more frequently. The ability to save their work digitally has also helped them keep track of their progress throughout the school year.\r\n\r\nOne memorable project involved students creating illustrated Chinese vocabulary journals. They practiced writing new characters, added drawings and examples, then scanned their pages to organize and share their work electronically. When the students first saw the Rocketbooks, they were amazed that the pages could be wiped clean and reused over and over again. This is a special place where they are not judged for reading a book on a lower level or for enjoying a graphic novel. My classroom library is a safe place for all!\r\n\r\nOver the years , my classroom library was beginning to show signs of wear and tear and the subject matter of many of the books was outdated. Originally, I only intended to use the materials for a social studies project, which we did. In that project, we had four teams working together to write a script and perform a show about the beginning of World War II, which was doubly challenging because they had to handle difficult material in a sensitive way. We made a little puppet theater and they all wrote and performed marvelously. But we also had a few groups write and perform puppet shows for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades students, as well as their parents and visiting teachers, for our Exhibition projects. As an International Baccalaureate school, our fifth graders research and write extensively about a social or environmental issue, and then present their findings and take action to help work towards a solution. We had groups incorporate their handmade puppets into shows about the endangered Atlantic sturgeon, child abuse, and hate crimes against people with disabilities (again, all done tastefully).
