When our PreK students entered the media center, they immediately ran to the puppet theater, then began pulling on their teachers and me, as their way of letting us know that they were excited about these new items in front of them! \r\n\r\nStudents were directed to listen to a story, then they would be able to use the puppets. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly and quietly the students sat down, as it normally takes both their teachers and me to get the students settled and focused. Those students who are able to communicate were engaged in the reading and participated by making the sounds of each animal highlighted in the book I read titled, \"Dear Zoo.\" After I finished reading the book, students then had the opportunity to select a puppet they wanted (I used animals to correlate with the book reading.) I re-read the book and when an animal was called, the student with that animal puppet came to the puppet theater to make the sound of that animal. As I mentioned earlier, some of the students do not speak, but during this activity, they tried making the animal sounds and two students wanted to read the book, but what was even more impressive, every student remained highly engaged throughout the entire lesson! When class ended, the students did not want to leave, as they held on to my legs.\r\n\r\nAs a result of the positive feedback and reactions I received, I used the puppet theater and hand puppets with our larger PreK class, and they too, were absolutely thrilled to role play! I have seen them get excited about activities, but never as excited as they were with the puppets. Consequently, I am going to create more lessons that include the hand puppets. I am also going to extend the puppets to the older students (3rd, 4th, and 5th,) because they were intrigued, as they passed the media center, but I will have them write a story to role play using the hand puppets.\r\n\r\nI am having so much fun with the puppets and will be forever grateful that you saw the importance of giving our students a voice and allowing them to take learning into their own hands.","fullyFundedDate":1739563277956,"projectUrl":"project/taking-learning-into-our-own-hands/9101103/","projectTitle":"Taking Learning Into Our Own Hands","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Marlo Barber","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7233484_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1704760112563","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7233484"},{"teacherId":8017092,"projectId":8728855,"letterContent":"Thank you, DonorsChoose donors, for your incredible generosity!
