Many of my students are not yet confident reading independently in English, and this technology has given them access to the same stories their peers are enjoying. By listening to books, they are building vocabulary, improving comprehension, and developing a stronger connection to the language in a way that feels supportive rather than overwhelming. The ability to listen to stories in their home language as well has been incredibly powerful. It has helped students feel included, valued, and more confident as learners.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for my students is the sense of choice and connection the Yoto Corner provides. They love selecting cards, listening independently, and sharing stories with one another. However, what has made this project truly special is the opportunity to bring their families into our classroom. Students light up knowing they can hear a parent or family member's voice reading a story to them during the school day. It creates a bridge between home and school that is both comforting and meaningful.\r\n\r\nI have seen several students, particularly my English Language Learners, gravitate toward the Yoto Corner daily. These students are more engaged, more willing to take risks with language, and more excited about stories. For some, hearing familiar voices or listening in their home language has provided a sense of comfort that helps them participate more fully in the classroom. This project has not only supported their academic growth, but it has also strengthened their sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this possible for my students and their families. Your generosity is helping create a more inclusive, connected, and engaging learning environment every day.","fullyFundedDate":1767393220198,"projectUrl":"project/yoto-corner/9911270/","projectTitle":"Yoto Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tran","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10358189_orig.png?crop=574,574,x0,y1&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763685436539","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10358189"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_51567","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":464,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":50,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":14,"percentWhite":45,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"19.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":73.7,"schoolId":51567,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Herbert Hoover Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Herbert Hoover Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/iowa/iowa-city-community-school-district/herbert-hoover-elementary-school/51567"}
