These students face a complex intersection of challenges, including Autism, ADHD, and behavioral disorders, and several are non-verbal. In a traditional setting, the world can feel loud, chaotic, and overwhelming for them. However, thanks to your generosity, our classroom has been transformed into a structured sanctuary where \"limitations\" are being replaced by \"possibilities.\"\r\n\r\nHow We Are Using Our New Resources\r\nWith your support, we have integrated high-tech communication devices and sensory regulation tools into our daily routine.\r\n\r\nA Specific Moment of Impact: Last week, one of our non-verbal students used a new tactile communication board to express a choice for the very first time. Instead of the usual frustration or physical outburst that comes from being misunderstood, he calmly pointed to the \"I want\" icon followed by the \"Reading Corner\" icon. The look of pure relief on his face—and the pride in his eyes when he realized he had been heard—was a profound moment that wouldn't have been possible without these specific resources.\r\n\r\nThe \"First Look\" Reaction\r\nWhen the boxes arrived and the materials were first set up, the energy in the room shifted from curiosity to pure joy. For our students with ADHD, the new active seating (wobble stools and floor cushions) was an immediate hit; they finally had a way to move their bodies without being \"disruptive.\"\r\n\r\nOur students on the Autism spectrum were drawn to the weighted blankets and light filters. One student, who often struggles with sensory overload, immediately went to the new \"Calm Down Kit,\" wrapped himself in a weighted lap pad, and took a deep, centering breath. It was as if the \"noise\" of the world finally tuned out, allowing him to focus on his task.\r\n\r\nWhat's Next for Our Scholars?\r\nOur current focus is a project titled \"My Voice, My Way.\" Now that we have the tools to communicate and regulate our bodies, we are working on a collaborative classroom mural.\r\n\r\nStep 1: Students are using their new sensory-friendly art supplies to express their emotions through color and texture.\r\n\r\nStep 2: We are practicing \"social scripts\" using our communication tools to ask peers for supplies (e.g., \"May I have the blue paint?\").\r\n\r\nStep 3: We will be inviting \"peer buddies\" from other classes to visit our Impact Center, where our scholars will lead a tour of their new stations, building their social confidence and sense of leadership.\r\n\r\nYour contribution didn't just buy \"stuff\"; it bought agency for children who are often left behind. You have given them a voice and a space where they can finally feel successful.","fullyFundedDate":1767146564880,"projectUrl":"project/bostons-little-makers-building-centerb/9721026/","projectTitle":"Boston's Little Makers: Building CenterBase Class","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Koura","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10266263_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y504&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1760832022067","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10266263"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_67291","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":168,"numTeachers":18,"percentFrplEligible":79,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":45,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":45,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 1","studentTeacherRatio":"9.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":73.0,"schoolId":67291,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Rev Dr Haynes Early Education Center on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Rev Dr Haynes Early Education Center","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/boston-public-schools/haynes-early-education-center/67291"}
