They immediately noticed the forest theme, the cozy seating choices, and the new spaces where they could work, collaborate, and learn. There were smiles, excited conversations, and more than one student saying, \"This doesn't even feel like a math classroom!\"\r\n\r\nThat was exactly what I hoped for.\r\n\r\nI wanted to create an organic, forest-inspired classroom that feels calm, welcoming, and safe—especially for students who experience math anxiety. The flexible seating gives students choices about where and how they work. Some students choose tall tables when they need to move or stand, while others settle into a comfortable seat or collaborative space when they are working through a challenging problem with a partner. These choices have helped us create a classroom where students can focus less on worrying about being \"wrong\" and more on being curious, trying different strategies, and learning from one another.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened during our recent open house. A student walked into the room and literally jumped for joy when she saw the low seating options. She told me she loves sitting on the floor to work and then she went and found other students and brought them into the room to see. That small moment represented exactly why I wanted to create this environment: a classroom where students don't just feel comfortable learning but genuinely feel excited to be there.\r\n\r\nYour generosity made these moments possible.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building a classroom culture where students see themselves as mathematicians. We are currently working on challenging problems that require us to explain our reasoning, listen to different strategies, and persevere when a solution doesn't come easily. As we move forward, students will use our flexible spaces for collaborative problem solving, mathematical discussions, independent practice, and reflection.\r\n\r\nJust like a forest, our classroom is a place where students can grow at different rates, take different paths, and still reach their own potential.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and helping us create a classroom where math feels less intimidating and more like a place to explore, wonder, and grow. Your support has made a difference that our students can see, feel, and experience every day.","fullyFundedDate":1781127574792,"projectUrl":"project/from-rows-to-rugs-building-a-cozy-math/10318905/","projectTitle":"From Rows to Rugs: Building a Cozy Math Workshop","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kidder","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10523040"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_80158","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":232,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":34,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":94,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":2,"gradesServed":"4 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"9.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":59.0,"schoolId":80158,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Haverhill Cooperative Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Haverhill Cooperative Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-hampshire/school-administrative-unit-23/haverhill-co-op-middle-school/80158"}
