Reading a story like Esperanza's went far beyond standard reading practice—it gave our students a rich foundation for empathy, resilience, and deep critical thinking. As we moved through the novel together, our students discovered how characters grew through hardship, built their academic Spanish vocabulary, and learned to draw meaningful connections to their own lives. Reading time truly became the highlight of our day. Our room was often filled with the warm sound of students reading aloud in cozy small groups, sharing their favorite moments, and eagerly debating what Esperanza would do next.\r\n\r\nThese books meant the world to our native Spanish speakers and newcomer students. Having access to high-quality literature in their primary language filled them with incredible pride, letting their brilliance shine as they jumped headfirst into complex discussions. One of my students, who used to be quite shy during reading time, lit up every single time we pulled out our copies and passionately led his group's daily chats. Seeing their culture and language celebrated in a real, beautiful book completely transformed how they viewed themselves as readers.
