Our new large and colorful rug is exactly what our classroom needed. Before that we had a flimsy gray rug that was lightweight, shifted every time we walked on it, and occasionally made us trip! It definitely wasn't made for the active life of a third and fourth grade classroom. \r\nThe children were so astonished when they walked into the room and saw this huge rug with bright colors and nice squares for them to have their own space. The students' smiles and exclamations clearly conveyed their excitement at having something so beautiful in our classroom. It was truly a gift to them to see that people cared about how their classroom looked and felt. \r\nIt isn't just beautiful, though: it is also very comfortable! The students went right over to it and started rubbing it, feeling how soft it was. They happily sit on it during our whole class learning time. Sometimes they are there to solve math problems, other times to tell or listen to stories, and every morning we gather there for our morning meeting. The students are thrilled that it is big enough to fit all of us around it! It is nice to have a soft cozy place to learn together. \r\nOn top of all that, the squares on the rug make it easy for the students to organize themselves. When they are at their desks, the students sit with teammates and now they are able to recreate that cohesion on the rug. They love having their own space while being close to their friends and classmates. Having a bit of personal space makes the students feel more comfortable and better able to focus.
