My students are excited to explore stories that reflect a variety of cultures, experiences, traditions, and perspectives. Many of the books have sparked thoughtful conversations about empathy, fairness, identity, kindness, and understanding others. Students are learning that books can act as both \"mirrors,\" where they see themselves reflected, and \"windows,\" where they learn about experiences different from their own.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is much more than simply practicing fluency or comprehension skills. These texts help students build critical thinking skills as they make connections, discuss characters' choices, compare perspectives, and ask questions about the world around them. Our social-emotional learning books have supported important conversations about emotions, resilience, friendship, and problem-solving, while the holiday and cultural books have helped students appreciate traditions and celebrations from many communities around the world.\r\n\r\nReading time has become one of the most engaging parts of our day. Students eagerly browse the classroom library, recommend books to one another, and often continue discussions long after read-alouds are finished. Some students who were previously hesitant readers have become more motivated to pick up books because they found stories and characters they connect with personally. Other students have been especially excited to share connections between the books and their own family traditions and experiences.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping create a classroom where every student feels seen, valued, and inspired to learn through reading.","fullyFundedDate":1778001666968,"projectUrl":"project/mirrors-and-windows-diverse-books-for-o/10142774/","projectTitle":"Mirrors and Windows: Diverse Books for Our Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Temple","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9116338_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1746333761292","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9116338"},{"teacherId":9436557,"projectId":9758760,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, my students now have access to books and literacy tools that are transforming the way we learn. With our new class set of Flat Stanley, reading journals, and annotation supplies, students are not just reading a story — they are learning how to think deeply about text. We are practicing skills like identifying character traits, tracking story structure, asking and answering questions with evidence, and building academic vocabulary. For my English Language Learners, these shared texts create a powerful opportunity to develop language skills in context — speaking, listening, reading, and writing all around one engaging story.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Students read in partnerships, stop to jot ideas on sticky notes, and turn and talk about character decisions or important plot moments. We use sentence stems to support academic conversations so every student can participate with confidence. Instead of quietly reading alone, my students are discussing, questioning, and learning how to support their thinking with evidence from the text. The room feels alive with ideas.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were once hesitant to speak during reading time are now volunteering to share their thinking. One student who is still developing English told me, \"I like this book because I can understand and talk about it.\" Moments like that remind me how important access to the right materials can be. Your support has given my students not just books, but confidence — and that is something that will stay with them long after this unit.","fullyFundedDate":1764699274286,"projectUrl":"project/unlocking-language-power-for-our-3rd-gra/9758760/","projectTitle":"Unlocking Language Power for Our 3rd Graders","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Bronson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9436557_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758755541520","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9436557"},{"teacherId":10279393,"projectId":9758768,"letterContent":"I wish you could see the excitement in our room when the STEM cart comes out!
