Having this new instrument immediately gave our percussion students another opportunity to participate fully in class and develop their skills using quality equipment.\r\n\r\nThe new snare drum has been used to help students practice proper playing technique, rhythm reading, sticking patterns, dynamics, and ensemble skills. It has been especially rewarding to watch students become more confident as they learn how important the snare drum is to keeping the pulse, adding energy, and supporting the overall sound of our band. Instead of simply learning about these concepts, students have been able to experience them firsthand.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue strengthening our percussion section as students work on more advanced rhythms and prepare music for upcoming performances. As they continue practicing, they will learn to listen closely to one another and understand how their individual part contributes to the success of the entire ensemble. What may seem like a simple snack to some has become a powerful tool for encouraging positive behavior, participation, and engagement in our classroom settings.\r\n\r\nI use Capri Sun drinks and Biscoff cookies as incentives to recognize students who are actively participating, completing assignments, demonstrating positive behavior, helping others, staying focused, and showing a willingness to learn. These small rewards give students something positive to work toward while reinforcing the message that their hard work and choices matter.\r\n\r\nOur students are energetic, creative, and full of potential. Sometimes they need an extra boost of encouragement to become fully engaged in a lesson or challenge themselves academically. The donated snacks have provided that extra motivation. Something as basic as having deodorant, body wash, lotion, hair-care products, feminine hygiene products, or other personal-care items can sometimes be a challenge for families.\r\n\r\nFor a middle school student, those challenges can feel especially overwhelming.\r\nAt an age when students are becoming more aware of how they look and how others see them, not having access to basic personal-care items can affect their confidence in ways that are difficult to put into words. A student who is worried about how they smell, how their hair looks, or whether they have what they need may be thinking about those worries instead of participating in class, talking with friends, or simply enjoying being a kid.\r\n\r\nThe Look Good, Feel Better closet provides our students with access to personal-care essentials in a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment. We want our students to know that asking for something they need is nothing to be embarrassed about. They deserve to feel clean, comfortable, confident, and cared for. The impact goes beyond the products themselves. It is the student who walks into school feeling a little more confident. It is the student who no longer has to worry about being teased because they didn't have access to something they needed. It is the student who can focus on learning instead of worrying about how they feel or how others may perceive them. And perhaps most importantly, it is the message we are sending every student:\r\nYou matter. You are valued. You deserve to feel good about yourself. Once they were inspired, my students were fully engaged in the project. I couldn't have asked for more than seeing them working and troubleshooting together. A lot of my students have told me it's easier to follow along in small group now that we have a clear visual space to work through problems together.\r\nOne thing I didn't see coming: my students have started leaving little quotes and inspirational messages on the board whenever they get a free moment.
