I requested a white board, cubbies, magnets, a monitor stand, and fake plants in order to make my space more welcoming for students. These supplies were immediately put to use and have helped elevate my office. \r\n\r\nThe white board has allowed me to visually keep track of upcoming evaluations. I have also used it to write inspirational quotes so students are surrounded by positive messages when they are being evaluated. The cubbies have helped in maintaining test equipment organized and easily accessible during evaluations. The fake plants allow for my office to feel like a cozy environment and bring light to the space. The monitor stand has allowed for there to be more space on my desk and provides a better view during report writing. \r\n\r\nThese supplies have greatly changed my work space for the better. A standout moment came when a student discovered the difference between radial and bilateral symmetry by physically aligning a sea anemone model and a brittle star model—students erupted into excited discussion as they sketched, compared notes, and revised their initial hypotheses.\r\nStudents were instantly engaged and curious when they first saw the materials; many gathered around the models before instructions were finished, asking questions and passing specimens between groups. They have made such a difference in getting students engaged in reading. My second unit of the year has been structured around this text. It has featured a series of lessons and activities on graphic novel elements, visual literacy, and the hero's journey. \r\n\r\nAfter each section, students completed a panel analysis which required students to analyze elements such as color, perspective, lines, texture, and shape and explain it's impact of our understanding of the story. To end our unit, students read about the hero's journey. I was SO proud to see how much of the story they retained as it is a complex plot full of difficult-to-pronounce names. \r\n\r\nMy favorite moment of this unit was when one particular student couldn't wait until the next day to finish the book and read ahead on his own. As an educator, I understand completely what it is like to not be \"seen\" in literature. My culture is seldom discussed in any American novel or text, and I cannot recall a time, as a student, where we were reading a text that had a Middle Eastern character.\r\n\r\nMy parents immigrated to America in the late 1970s from Iran. They are Armenian diaspora seeking political asylum from a Muslim-Regime. Had it not been for their haste, bravery, and courage to immigrate- I would not be who I am today. \r\n\r\nMy students resonate with my personal story here at Cleveland Charter High School. Most of my students come from diverse, multi-cultural, immigrant households. They understand what it is like to be \"invisible\" in the text. Persepolis, however, speaks to all who understand such circumstance as parents wanting a better future for their children, families grappling with war or political regimes within their home country, and now with the current ICE raids among us, Persepolis sheds light and shares situations close to home but from across the globe. \r\n\r\nThe generational push and pull of migration and motherland are seen in Marjane Satrap's novel. As he was helping me unbox the generous donations, he saw that they were The Great Gatsby novels but the graphic novel version and immediately said, \"This is cool Ms. V, can I read it?\". This means EVERYTHING to me and as an educator. The fact that a student saw a book in a different format and was engaged instantly- made my day!\r\n\r\nWhether or not students have already read The Great Gatsby novel or have yet to read it- the graphic novel speaks to the 21st century learner.
