I have seen blocks turn into a family, patterns made with peg people, mirrors used to extend a game, or to watch their own face as they narrate. Sorting the buttons into the sorting trays has become a favorite activity. Sometimes they sort by color, sometimes they sort by shape, sometimes they turn the buttons into something else entirely. I've seen them become pirates' treasure, button families, food in a pretend restaurant, and jewels for a queen. \r\n\r\nI feel thankful every day when my students walk into the room, look at the baskets on each table, choose their loose parts for the day, and begin letting their creativity take over.
