In our room I have a simple plastic scale that is great for use but not durable for everyday play at this age. While we have not received the new balance scale yet, I an extremely excited for them to have more resources available each day for experiments. The chicken growth cycle, animal set, and farm/ranch sets will be great additions to their science center when we begin learning about different animals. Last year we were lucky enough to have an incubator in the class and hatch chicks - the students went wild! Everyday they would run in the check the progress and mark off another day on our hatching calendar. At the end of last school year, they saw what we were getting and were very happy about all the dirt, \"diggers\", and bug collectors that were coming our way. We planted small flower pots that they watched everyday for growth and loudly shouted when the sprouts first started to pop up. I enjoyed seeing their creativity! Students worked on building things together and it taught them teamwork skills naturally. Following the service portion, they got to hear the reason behind our district's food pack program. It was great for students to hear and we all walked away with more empathetic hearts! We got to use them the first week when we created our external and internal self portraits. Since then, students frequently ask me \"Ms. Matthews, can I use the colors of the world crayons [or colored pencils] for my drawing?\" They know they are always available for them to use and they take pride in making sure everyone is appropriately represented in their drawings. \r\n\r\nMost recently, we completed a Dr. King artwork using our crayons and watercolors. Students had a blast using the watercolors and seeing their artwork turn into a masterpiece. These materials have been well loved already and have allowed all students to feel represented in their artwork. These keychains will be able to be attached to their badge reels and serve as a daily reminder that they are loved and appreciated. They continued to ask about when they could use them and how often. We use our supplies as often as possible now and I have seen my students improve, especially our 6th graders, by leaps and bounds by just having these simple practice pads and supplies. \r\n\r\nWe are going to continue to push our students for harder, more technical music as they progress as musicians.
