As students reach high school and they still have difficulties reading they become discouraged and reject the concept of reading so it is up to me, as their teacher, to find a way to grab their attention. Over the last several years I have discovered that magazines provide this hook that will reel in even the most reluctant reader! Providing a variety of magazines written at different levels gives each student something interesting to read while increasing reading ability and comprehension. They may choose the article for the pictures, but soon find themselves sounding out words in the article to find out what is actually happening. For three years I have used Scholastic SCOPE and Upfront magazines in my class as the main curriculum and they have proven to be great materials for teaching reading strategies and skills.
