I read my students the book about Temple Grandin building her own squeeze machine. I had the opportunity to see her speak a few weeks ago and also got her to autograph our class book \r\n\r\nWhen I opened the box of our steam roller and put it down on a mat for my students to try, their eyes got big and bright. They were very excited! Most of them have seen one or used one in the Occupational Therapy room. However, now we have one in our classroom for them to use each and every day. The students lined up and squeezed through and loved it, some more than others. \r\n\r\nEach day I leave it out during certain times for the students to access and use as they would like, especially during break times. But I also have it available when I know that certain students need some deep sensory input to help them calm down and focus. This machine has changed our classroom for the better. We are very thankful for each and every one of your generosity in providing my students with additional opportunities to succeed in their education. My students were ecstatic with each and every package that arrived and looked forward to the great reveal. They were thankful for the items and couldn't wait to use them. We have used some of the items to expand their learning, organize our classroom better, provide more visual representation for lessons, hands-on activities like building sentences, creating cvc words, and practicing their signing. They've enjoyed the books we received, taking initiative in reading some of those books, and taken turns sitting in the beanbag, when possible. I've noticed an improvement in a lot of my students quality of work, willingness to learn, and motivation. The step ladder and rolling basket has helped me a lot when needing to put things up or transitioning more things at a time. I utilized the rolling cart to organize our small group work better. I will continue to find ways to not only challenge my students to better their education, but also create a safe space for them to WANT to learn and be themselves. They eagerly awaited me opening each item and couldn't wait to use the materials. In our classroom we focus a lot on social-emotional skills, and especially identifying feelings and emotions. These skills are much easier for my students, especially the ones with autism, when they have motivating, cute, and hands-on materials that they can refer to and access. \r\n\r\nWe watch a lot of videos, especially on the topic of feelings and emotions. My students love the Little Spot of Feelings songs and characters, and the Ninja Life Hacks plushies and books are a perfect addition to our classroom resources. Now the Spots and Ninjas line our window sills and the students refer to them and the posters when trying to express themselves. \r\n\r\nOne of my students enjoys identifying each Spot or Ninja when we watch the videos and the songs. He can even imitate specific facial expressions that correlated. These types of social skills are beneficial to my Special Education students as they get older and need to relate to more people in their lives. \r\n\r\nThe emotions sensory bottles are very calming for my students, as is the magnetic sand. These items are used almost daily by my students during their earened break times. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your kindness and thoughtful donations in helping fund this project fo rmy classroom. The items are appreciated and well used in our classroom on a daily basis.
