As a teacher in an urban school, I find myself struggling to meet the needs of all of my students. Namely, many of my students come to school with needs of hygiene and nourishment unmet. Through your donations, I have been able to meet my student's foundational needs to ensure that I am able to expand their education. \r\n\r\nYour donations of hygiene products and snacks started my school year off right. I gave my students a brief introduction to the products I had, along with my willingness to give them based on need. Many students were hesitant at first, but many have begun to come to me for basic needs to help them get through the school days with confidence. This has caused many of my more reserved students to blossom.\r\n\r\nI cannot thank you enough in regards to this project. I have been able to help my students by creating a much more comfortable, clean, and welcoming space for them. \r\n\r\nAt the beginning of the school year, I utilized the lamps and light covers to create a warmer space in my room. With no windows, it can be difficult to make sure that students are not constantly facing the harsh fluorescent lighting. By having these lights ready at the beginning of the year, I made sure that my students came in to a welcome space. In addition, having the plug ins going ensured that my room had a warm smell that would bring students comfort. \r\n\r\nA major improvement for my room was the skin tone band aids. I do not think twice about the colors of band aids that I use. However, my students have a difficult time concealing their injuries with band aids that match their skin. The skin tone band aids ensure that my students are able to continue their learning without explaining injuries to their peers. \r\n\r\nMy next step is to continue to collect items that contribute to the overall environment of my classroom. With items like warm lights, good smells, cleaning supplies, and accommodating needs. I want to make my room a calming space for students of all needs and abilities. This is something new that I am working on incorporating into my classroom, and your project helped me to strengthen my efforts.\r\n\r\nAs a teacher in an urban setting, I am constantly striving to continue my own education regarding racial and social justice. While I am able to make these strides on my own time, I found that I am learning the most from my own students! Through novels, such as the ones donated to me, I am able to facilitate conversations regarding race, gender, and equality. Much of our reading is done solo on Chromebooks, but we are working on facilitating read alouds and small group reading! It's a slow process, as we have to first identify the student's individual reading levels.\r\n\r\nMany of my more independent students are enjoying reading the new novels! My students are able to use these supplies to engage and learn more about urban agriculture.\r\n\r\nMy students greatly appreciated being able to use our new supplies in the greenhouse, outside, and inside of the school to grow all kinds of wonderful veggies, herbs, flowers, and perennials. The act of journaling has become an essential part of their learning process, providing both a creative and personal outlet for their evolving understanding of the texts.\r\nWhen my students first received the new notebooks and supplies, their faces lit up with excitement. Many shared how much more meaningful their journals felt now that they had a dedicated space for their reflections. The notebooks have allowed them to take pride in their work, with some even decorating the covers to give them a personal touch.
