I teach environmental science to students in an urban school district. The majority of my students are low income and have not been exposed to the concept of environmental science before. Learning how to grow fruits and vegetables helps to teach my students about good environmental habits like buying locally produced food. My students live in a food desert and they are rarely exposed to the joy of growing plants, much less the benefits of fresh fruit and vegetables. My school has a small greenhouse and several classrooms with good natural light that are perfect for growing plants in. Before we can start growing plants, we need some basic supplies. The PVC fittings and bayite casters will go towards making a table to grow the plants on. The Miracle-Gro, seedling trays, humidity domes, and growing trays are all supplies we need to successfully start the seeds. While the plant labels will keep us organized. I want to teach my students how to grow their own food from seed. Growing their own plants teaches my students about where their food comes from, how to grow their own food, better nutritional habits, how to cook new foods, factors which affect plant growth, and how plants grow. Starting many plants from seed, such as tomatoes, is more cost efficient than buying young plants from a greenhouse.
