We began by learning about Hispanic artist and illustrator David Maldonado and exploring the unique qualities that make his artwork stand out. Students closely observed his use of bold colors, strong black outlines, imaginative animals, patterns, and playful details. We discussed how artists develop a recognizable style and how their culture, experiences, and creativity can influence the work they create.\r\n\r\nAs we studied Maldonado's artwork, my students practiced important observation and critical-thinking skills. Instead of simply looking at a painting, they learned to ask questions such as: What do you notice first? Why do you think the artist chose these colors? What makes this piece original? How does the artwork make you feel? These conversations encouraged students to look more carefully at art and to understand that every artistic choice can communicate an idea or emotion.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part of the project was when students became artists themselves. Each student received a canvas and created an original painting inspired by elements of David Maldonado's style. They were encouraged to use their own ideas rather than copy an existing piece. Students made decisions about color, background, patterns, animals, scenery, and special details that would make their artwork unique. This gave them the opportunity to take creative risks, solve problems, revise their ideas, and develop confidence in their own artistic abilities.\r\n\r\nThe project also strengthened students' understanding of how the arts can connect us to people and cultures beyond our own classroom. Learning about a Hispanic artist during Hispanic Heritage Month helped students see that celebrating culture can happen through literature, history, music, and visual art. It created an authentic opportunity to discuss diversity, creativity, and the contributions artists make to our world.\r\n\r\nStudents were extremely proud of their finished canvases. Seeing their individual pieces displayed together transformed the project into a true classroom art exhibition. Each painting reflects a different student's imagination and personality while also showing what they learned from studying Maldonado's work.\r\n\r\nThis experience went far beyond creating a beautiful painting. Students practiced creativity, perseverance, decision-making, observation, and artistic expression while developing a greater appreciation for Hispanic culture and the arts. Most importantly, they learned that inspiration from another artist can be the beginning of creating something completely their own.\r\n\r\nWe are incredibly excited to share their colorful, imaginative artwork.
