Your donation has already made a meaningful difference in how my students engage with reading and there is always a line at the beginning of independent reading time for these books! These books are helping students build critical literacy skills—such as making text-to-self connections, analyzing character motivations, recognizing themes, and discussing real-world issues like identity, race, perseverance, and belonging. Many students are also exploring new genres for the first time. I love seeing them try something new and maybe even find a new favorite!\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and social. Students read independently, talk with one another about books they love, recommend titles to peers, and eagerly share connections during read-alouds and informal discussions. Several students told me these books help them \"get their mind off their phones,\" while others shared that they finally had something to read when they forgot or couldn't access a book elsewhere. As you will read in the thank you notes, one student shared that reading Heartstopper helped them understand that \"it shouldn't matter if you're gay or not,\" while another said Frizzy made them feel seen because it reflected their culture and experiences. These moments remind me how powerful representation and choice can be.\r\n\r\nWhat stands out most is how deeply students are connecting to these stories. Students have gravitated toward books like The Hate U Give, American Born Chinese, Scythe, Mexikid, Sadie, and sports biographies because the characters feel real and the topics matter to them. One student shared that reading about Cristiano Ronaldo taught them not to give up on their dreams, while another said The Crossover reflected the challenge of balancing sports, family, and personal struggles. Your generosity has given students access to stories that validate their identities, spark curiosity, and build lifelong reading habits. It is already amazing to see how my students are reacting to the first chapter of the book. As we begin discussing the concept of being released, jobs chosen for you, rules that dictate whether you have a family or not have already gotten some big reactions. From students saying, \"I don't know if I like this book, it's crazy\". \"What?! I don't want someone to tell me how to live.\" Comments like this tell me their minds are being provoked and they are making connections to the readings.\r\n\r\nThe Teacher Pay Teachers gift card has allowed me to come up with fun creative ways to interact the text.","fullyFundedDate":1744238046943,"projectUrl":"project/its-the-choosing-thats-important-isn/9213929/","projectTitle":"“It's the Choosing That's Important, Isn't It?” -Lois Lowery","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Swonger","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8682060_orig.jpg?crop=372,372,x730,y398&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1662698044313","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8682060"},{"teacherId":5709536,"projectId":9364378,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous donations.
