When we are able to print materials in color, it seems to help! My Middle School students participate in an intensive program to address their needs as struggling readers. It is often difficult to find reading material that accommodates for their limited skills, yet has content that is appropriate for their age and maturity level.\r\n\r\nThe books in the collection I purchased, thanks to you, are high-interest with characters close in age to my students. They are readable for the majority of students, and because I was able to buy two sets, students can read and talk about the texts with a peer.\r\n\r\nOne of my 8th grade students selected to read a book about a hybrid creature that has escaped from a research facility and is troubling a small town. He stated that he's never read a book like this before. Every opportunity he has, he asks to read another chapter so he can find out what will happen next. Every one of my 7th and 8th graders now has their own interactive history notebook that we've been using every day. The interactive notebooks have made such a difference in their learning experience. Since receiving the materials, they have been using their composition notebooks to take notes, complete class activities, and engage in their daily warm ups. \r\n\r\nMy 7th grade classes were able to learn about the five themes of geography and to take detailed notes in their notebooks! We are beginning our Roman Empire unit, where they'll create character profiles of people from different social classes and analyze how Roman innovations still influence our lives today. My 8th grade classes have also been using their notebooks to take notes and learn about Indigenous peoples and colonization.
