My students were incredibly excited when they saw the new materials and immediately wanted to know when and how we would get to use them. There is something so special about watching students realize that people outside of our school believe in them and are willing to invest in their learning.\r\n\r\nWe have been using these resources to help create a classroom environment where students can stay organized, engaged, and excited about learning. As a 5th Grade Dual Language Immersion classroom, our students spend their days learning, reading, writing, thinking, and communicating across both English and Spanish. Having materials that are accessible, organized, and ready for students allows us to spend less time searching for what we need and more time actually learning together.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments has simply been watching students take ownership of the materials. At the beginning of the year, we have been talking a lot about responsibility and what it means to be a 5th grader and a leader in our school. Students are learning that our classroom belongs to all of us, which means taking care of our supplies, returning materials to their correct places, and making sure our space is ready for the next learning opportunity. These resources have given us an authentic way to practice those skills every single day.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are especially exciting! Students are beginning deeper work in literacy, math, social studies, and Spanish literacy. In English literacy, we are beginning our study of Esperanza Rising, where students will closely examine Esperanza as a character and track how her experiences, challenges, and relationships help her grow and come of age throughout the novel. In math, students are beginning their work with volume by building, exploring, and reasoning with unit cubes. Throughout all of this learning, the resources you provided will continue supporting students as they collaborate, organize their thinking, and grow as independent learners.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and helping us begin the school year with the tools we need to learn and grow. Working in a low-income area, and as a reading interventionist, I am working with students that haven't had a lot of literacy exposure or experience with books. They were proud to take them back to their classrooms to practice there as well. They were also pumped to have the new magnet letter boards as well - building and breaking apart words is important to decoding and reading! Hands on materials like these is important for all learners. \r\n\r\nOur next steps will be to continue the hard work they are doing in and out of the classroom! When a students' face lights up because she realizes she just read the word/sentence correctly, I know I've done my job. The personal amplification systems are being used frequently during speech therapy sessions by both myself as well as the other speech therapist at my school. \r\n\r\nThe Pocketalkers have proved themselves to be more effective in amplifying speech sounds. When students are first learning a new sound, hearing an amplified accurate production made by me during auditory bombardment activities is helpful. During practice activities, the students are able to more accurately discern the difference between a sound being said accurately or inaccurately, both in my speech as well as their own speech. It is very helpful for them to hear their own speech more clearly to increase the self awareness, self monitoring and self correcting of speech errors. \r\nWhile lower tech amplification tools exist, they aren't as effective compared to the Pocketalker, especially for students working on speech sounds such as /s/ or /r/, where there can be subtle differences between an accurate or inaccurate production. \r\n\r\nI thank you whole heartedly for your contributions to this project.
