Like many, my 5th grade class is missing out on so much. I want to put together a tote bag of math games, science experiments, school supplies, and healthy snacks to drop off at student homes. Most of my students don't have access to learning materials at home. With school closed they will have missed 3 months of in person learning. Summer school will also be virtual this summer so I believe providing my kids with these supplies is essential for them to maintain their skills. The math games I will be sending home are from the Bridges curriculum so the students are familiar with them. These games will allow students to maintain their multiplication fluency, practice finding equivalent fractions, and practice adding fractions with unlike denominators. This set of skills are critical for 6th grade.
The science experiments I'm including are all designed to be done at home and are centered around every day phenomena. This will encourage students to think critically about conducting their own experiments. These high interest experiments will hopefully encourage student driven inquiry over the summer.
Beyond the educational aspect, they are also missing out on all of the fun things our 5th graders normally get to do at the end of the school year. So I plan to add some things just for fun and a few snacks because they deserve it!
