It has increased their test scores because of the notes they're able to take and study from.\r\n\r\nYour support is helping students grow not only as learners but also as writers. As amazing as it sounds, they are taking turns caring for this space by cleaning and vacuuming! \r\n\r\nWhile the calming/reading corner project is designed to positively impact my sixth-grade students by creating a dedicated space for them to relax and focus, it is doing just that. The space was intended to reduce distractions, enabling students to immerse themselves in reading and improve learning outcomes. By incorporating elements like flexible seating, soothing lighting, and a clean environment, the project aims to support students' emotional regulation and concentration, and it is doing just that. \r\n\r\nA calming corner is also about fostering a positive attitude toward learning and offering a retreat from academic pressures, which can help students manage stress. By providing a safe and comfortable space, the project seeks to make every student feel valued and motivated, ultimately boosting engagement and supporting diverse learning needs. Starting with the understanding that so many people found it important to donate and provide this special text for us, to exploring the theme and background for the reading before starting, my students are already open to the possibility of the lessons the story has to offer.\r\n\r\nI have several hopes for reading this novel with my students. \"A Long Walk to Water\" may impact my sixth-grade students by serving as a bridge between their diverse lives and global realities. This powerful narrative, set against the backdrop of Sudan, allows students in our multicultural Southern California middle school to connect with universal themes of perseverance and hope, fostering a classroom environment where both shared experiences and individual differences are valued.\r\n\r\nThe dual narrative structure—featuring Salva, a \"Lost Boy\" refugee, and Nya, a girl seeking water is instrumental in building a deep sense of empathy. Students who come from various backgrounds, including those with personal or familial experiences of immigration or hardship, can see elements of their own realities reflected, while others gain a critical window into lives vastly different from their own. This mirror and window dynamic is essential for developing a global perspective.\r\n\r\nThrough engaged participation in Socratic seminars and readers' theater, students are improving their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills. The book's engaging and approachable nature has reinvigorated their interest in reading, demonstrating the value of literature in making global issues personal and relatable. Discussions around the text highlight acts of kindness even in desperate circumstances, inspiring students to consider their own capacity for positive action and giving. \r\n\r\nThank you again to all who have made this experience possible for my students!","fullyFundedDate":1760121072584,"projectUrl":"project/open-a-book-open-the-world/9789749/","projectTitle":"Open a Book - Open the World","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Stealey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1398387_orig.png?crop=1242,1242,x0,y107&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724533102732","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sstealey"},{"teacherId":5230673,"projectId":9182000,"letterContent":"Thank You for Bringing Our Green Architecture Projects to Life!\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my students in the Green Architecture class were thrilled to receive the art supplies they needed: paint, paper, glue, and more. Their excitement was contagious the moment the materials arrived. Eyes lit up, hands reached eagerly for the colors, and creativity instantly took over the room.\r\n\r\nWith your support, students began transforming simple cardboard and foam board into imaginative, eco-friendly model homes. Using the paint, they illustrated green roofs, solar panels, and energy-efficient features. With scrap paper and mixed media, they added tiny furniture, landscaping, and even floor plans! One student proudly built a solar-powered tiny home surrounded by a garden made from scrap paper, flowers; another created a smart home with rainwater collection painted on the roof. Their faces lit up as their ideas took physical form, and they proudly presented them to their classmates.\r\n\r\nThese supplies didn't just make our classroom more colorful; they brought design concepts to life. Students began seeing themselves as real architects, collaborating, problem-solving, and thinking critically about sustainable living. The impact has been powerful: they're not just building a model home, they are building confidence and a belief that their ideas matter.\r\n\r\nNext, students will present their designs in a \"Green Expo,\" explaining their sustainable choices and architectural decisions to peers and staff. Your support has made this journey possible, and we are so grateful. They're out on the field, honing their skills and enjoying the camaraderie that comes with team sports. Similarly, our basketball team, with more than 25 students, is making great use of the donated basketball in the gym. This ball has become particularly precious to us, as it's now our best ball after a recent unfortunate incident where a few basketballs were stolen. Your contribution ensures that our students can continue to practice and compete effectively.\r\n\r\nThe reaction from our students when they first saw the new equipment was absolutely heartwarming. Their excitement was palpable, and their enthusiasm for playing reached new heights.
