Because of your support for Feel the Beat: Congas & Bongos for Young Musicians 9767564!, our scholars now have access to authentic percussion instruments that elevate their musicianship, confidence, and joy in learning.\r\n\r\nThe moment the boxes arrived, students gathered around with excitement, asking, \"Are those really for us?\" When the first class sat in a circle and played their opening call-and-response rhythms on the congas and bongos, the entire room transformed. Students who are typically shy began to lead patterns; students who struggle academically found immediate success through steady beat and cooperative music-making. The instruments gave them a powerful way to communicate, create, and express themselves.\r\n\r\nThese percussion instruments have already become the heartbeat of our classroom:\r\n\tK–2 scholars use the bongos to explore steady beat, echo rhythms, and movement-based literacy activities.\r\n\tGrades 3–5 are learning ensemble skills, call-and-response traditions, improvisation, and cultural connections tied to Latin American and African diasporic music.\r\n\tDuring our Winter Celebration Concert rehearsals, students used the congas to anchor tempo and provide authentic rhythmic color to global selections.\r\n\tFor many of our scholars, this is their first time ever touching or playing real congas and bongos—and the pride on their faces is unforgettable.\r\n\r\nYour gift reaches far beyond a single lesson. These instruments will serve hundreds of students this year—and thousands more in the years to come. They provide structure, belonging, and a positive outlet for students who need hands-on, expressive ways to succeed.\r\n\r\nOn behalf of every Eagle at Eno Valley Elementary, thank you for believing in our young musicians. We say our affirmations, take movement breaks, and do mindfulness activities. When we read or write the words, sit/sat, the children always connect them back to our rug. The binoculars and field guides made it easier for students to observe and learn like real scientists, and many especially enjoyed sketching their findings in their journals. The new journals became an essential tool in our classroom—helping students not only record their observations but also think more deeply about what they see, wonder, and discover.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened this past May, when students combined their new journaling skills with a campus nature project. Armed with their science notebooks, they explored the outdoor spaces around our school, curious about the birds, insects, and plants they noticed. I'll never forget their excitement the first time they opened their journals outside—many immediately started sketching a butterfly or writing questions like, \"Why is this plant growing here?\" and \"why do the bees like these little flower?\" Their natural curiosity shined through, and their journals gave them the structure to capture those thoughts like real scientists and engineers.\r\n\r\nThe impact goes beyond science, too. Students strengthened their reading, writing, and math skills every time they organized observations, recorded data, or reflected on an observation. For my English learners especially, these journals seemed to become a safe space to practice academic language and connect new vocabulary to hands-on experiences.\r\n\r\nI also encouraged my students to continue their observations, and to expand there journals throughout the summer by observing local wildlife, noticing patterns, and asking deeper questions. \r\n\r\nThank you again for investing in my classroom.
