One especially powerful moment was hearing students excitedly share that they finally saw characters, families, or experiences that felt familiar to their own lives. Other students were equally engaged in learning about experiences different from their own, leading to thoughtful discussions, empathy, and stronger classroom connections.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new books, their excitement was immediate. Many eagerly searched through the collection, recommending titles to one another and asking if they could begin reading right away. We can also read them in class for choice reading, which I believe helps many kids discover the joy of reading. It gives them time away from screens! The new books were a hit, especially The Hunger Games series, and students eagerly checked out these brand new books to keep their choice reading going over winter break. We read about the possibility of colonizing Mars. We read argumentative articles about the pros and cons of sending humans to outer space and then students formed their own opinion and wrote their own essays. The space-themed pencils and stress balls were a hit with the kids and made the unit more fun. We also referenced our planet poster daily, such a nice visual! The nonfiction books about space helped supplement our learning and a few kids checked them out for choice reading. These materials have made it much easier for me to engage my learners and keep track of data. My students are excited to use the spinner to put some excitement into class by spinning for activities. Our current events magazines have been very timely with the articles in it; giving my students a variety of resources as they learn in my room.
