They all saw the boxes when they arrived and I had shown them all the pieces that I had to put together first before we could get to use them. They were waiting with great anticipation and excitement for the day I would finally pull them out of the boxes and pass them out. \r\nI had them watching some song videos in different music styles to help them learn how to tie their shoes. And they were told to keep trying until they got it. Many of them still find this very difficult so we are going to keep trying at least once every other lesson to put a shoe tying song into the lesson plan. I'm sure that they will get it if they continue to practice. I'm hoping that just like in music, practice will make perfect. \r\nThe ones who already know how to tie their shoes had to at least tie the shoe on their board one time and then they could try using the other items, the belts with buckles and buttons, and puzzle pieces. After about 10 minutes I asked the ones who know to tie their shoes, to go and try to help a friend without tying the shoe for them. I was also trying to pull a few aside to help them and show them how it's done. They took up the challenge and really put forth an effort to help their friends out. Throughout the year, I do many STEM activities around stories we read or themes I am teaching, including building houses that the big bad wolf can't blow down and a wall that Humpty Dumpty won't fall off of. It's such a change from the technology that they have become familiar with. These activities promote social skills as the students work together, learn to compromise, and listen to one another. It develops fine motor skills and problem solving skills, without asking five year old students to sit and complete worksheets. It is so rewarding to see them actively engaged and excited about learning. The supplies have allowed us to create hands-on learning centers that focus on both academic and functional skills. One student who typically struggles to stay engaged was able to independently complete the activity using the tools provided, which was a wonderful milestone to witness.\r\n\r\nTheir faces lit up with excitement! Many of our students are motivated by tactile and visual learning, so the bright, interactive supplies immediately drew them in. For some, just having something new and colorful sparked curiosity and joy, which carried over into their learning and behavior for the rest of the day.\r\n\r\nWe are now incorporating the resources into an ongoing unit on communication and problem-solving. The next step is for students to use the supplies in small group projects where they will collaborate to complete tasks such as sequencing steps to a story or solving multi-step math problems. These activities not only strengthen academic growth but also help develop social skills like teamwork, turn-taking, and independence.
