One of the first materials from my project list to arrive was the game Jenga. Because I had not received all the materials yet I didn't introduce the new materials to my students, but put them on the bottom self of my bookcase. One of my students came in and immediately noticed the game. His face lit up when he recognized it! \r\n\r\nPlaying Jenga and Uno has given us the opportunity to be silly and have fun together. Sometimes it feels difficult to connect with each other because of the language barrier but playing these games lets the students have fun with each other and me This really builds trust and respect which is vital for future learning. \r\n\r\nPlaying the games Uno and Battleship has given us great opportunities to practice colors, numbers and letters in English! One day I taught a student how to play battleship. The rules can feel complicated when you know English - even more so when you don't! But my student was able to practice his letters in a low pressure environment. If he didn't know the letter in English he would say it in Spanish or draw it in the air. I would help him identify the letter and he would practice saying it in English! By the end of the game he definitely knew a few more letters!\r\n\r\nI was also able to share some of the games with a colleague who used them for community building. She and I share a classroom space so I was able to observe as she played Uno with her group.
