They need something engaging that grabs their attention. My middle school students appreciate the ability to come to our school library to check out books to read for silent reading in their ELA classes and for fun at home. I carefully selected the books for this project based on the student population of my school.\r\n\r\nThe first activity I plan each school year with the 8th graders at my school is a Book Tasting. This activity gives students the opportunity to try out different kinds of books. I place books from different genres on each table and students select three to \"taste.\" I used the books we received from Donors Choose for the Book Tasting this year. It was exciting to have brand new books available for students! 52% of the Donors Choose books I received were checked out at the Book Tasting. I am thrilled that over half of the books were checked out the first time they were introduced to the students! Some of the books I ordered were part of a series, so they were not placed out for the Book Tasting, so even more will be checked out soon. \r\n\r\n57% of the students at my school read 2 or more reading levels below grade level according to our first iReady assessment this school year. Students improve their reading skills by reading independently in addition to classroom instruction. I know the books I received through Donors Choose will circulate many times throughout the school year and help students improve their reading skills. Several students wrote about how interesting and attention-grabbing the books were in the Book Tasting. They are motivated to read these books!","fullyFundedDate":1746496803577,"projectUrl":"project/library-books-for-eager-eagle-readers/9303478/","projectTitle":"Library Books for Eager Eagle Readers!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. King","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4848127_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1506970804311","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4848127"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_78049","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":739,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":15,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":70,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"23.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.0,"schoolId":78049,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about El Capitan Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"El Capitan Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/central-unified-school-district/el-capitan-middle-school/78049"}
