The Reading Buddies program between the middle school in which I work and the neighboring elementary school is flourishing. What started as one class project on character education has now evolved into several classes from my middle school reading to students in primary classes at the neighboring elementary school.
Building confidence in our middle school readers is one of the primary goals of this program. Another goal is to help our middle school students make connections with elementary students and serve as role models in the area of literacy and character education. We cannot do this without more books.
The middle school students check out two "Reading Buddies" books from the school library to read to elementary students every other week (some on a weekly basis). This allows our middle school students to prepare to read to the younger students (by practicing reading aloud, making sure they understand the themes in the stories, and preparing questions to ask the younger students). Because the program is expanding, we desperately need more primary level books.
