As my students read the story, they reflected on their own \"invisible threads\" with family, friends, and even people they may not always understand. Many students shared personal stories, practiced compassion, and began to see how small acts of kindness can have a big impact.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, every student was able to engage with the text, participate in discussions, and feel included in a shared reading experience. Students are using these new resources daily across reading, writing, math, and social-emotional learning.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite projects so far has been during writing and math stations. Students use the dry erase markers, laminated sheets, and whiteboard tape to solve math problems and practice sentence building right at their desks. The ability to write, erase, and try again has helped students feel more confident taking risks. The gel pens, markers, pencils, and paper have also made writing time extra exciting—students are eager to draft stories, revise their work, and proudly share their ideas.\r\n\r\nWhen the supplies first arrived, my students were thrilled. They loved seeing the colorful markers, fresh paper, and classroom tools, and several students immediately asked, \"Are these for us?\" Their excitement was contagious, and it made them feel valued and supported. Even simple things like new erasers or pencils felt special to them. The snacks and bowls have also been a big help, allowing us to celebrate hard work and focus during long learning days.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, our classroom feels like a place where learning is fun and structured. Next, students will continue using these materials for small-group instruction, monthly goal-setting on our large calendar, and hands-on projects that strengthen their reading comprehension, math problem-solving, and writing skills. Using the new resources, four classrooms designed, built, and continue to maintain hands-on ecosystem models, including desktop pond ecosystems and rotting log ecosystems. Students eagerly observed how plants, animals, decomposers, water, soil, and air interact, collecting data and making thoughtful adjustments as their systems changed over time. One especially memorable moment came when students worked together to rescue an abandoned baby bearded dragon, applying their knowledge of ecosystems to design and build a safe, appropriate habitat that met his survival needs. Seeing their learning transfer so naturally to a real-world situation was incredibly powerful.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials—especially the root viewer, ant farm, and flexible floor seating—the excitement was immediate. They couldn't wait to get started. The root viewer allowed students to observe root growth and nutrient uptake in real time, while the ant farm sparked rich discussions about animal behavior, colony systems, and survival strategies. The floor seating chairs transformed our classroom into a collaborative learning space where students gathered comfortably for observations, scientific discussions, and reflection. These moments fostered curiosity, teamwork, and student-led conversations that felt authentic and joyful.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue long-term observations of their ecosystems, analyze patterns of matter and energy flow, and refine their models to better represent real environmental systems—all aligned to the 5th grade NGSS standard 5-LS2-1. These experiences have empowered students to think like scientists, communicate like scholars, and take true ownership of their learning. As soon as the whiteboard easels and markers were set up, my 5th graders were eager to dive in. Standing at the boards encouraged them to talk through their thinking, experiment with strategies, and revise their work without hesitation. The materials immediately created a more active, hands-on environment where every student felt invited to participate and contribute.\r\n\r\nAcross these sessions, I've seen a noticeable increase in students' verbal reasoning and problem-solving abilities. They now explain their ideas more clearly, ask stronger questions, and compare solution paths with greater confidence. One memorable moment occurred when a typically quiet student used the markers to illustrate a multi-step solution for her group. This visual explanation sparked a rich discussion among her peers and helped multiple groups clarify their approach. Moments like this show how vertical learning makes mathematical thinking more visible and collaborative.\r\n\r\nWe will continue using these materials as we move into upcoming units involving fractions, decimals, and algebraic thinking. The vertical boards allow students to test ideas, justify their reasoning, and learn from one another in a dynamic way that traditional seated work simply doesn't offer. Each year, as more students walk through the doors of our school, the need for resources also grows. Yet thanks to your generosity, the circle of impact keeps expanding. Students who benefit from these experiences now carry their confidence and knowledge forward, often inspiring their classmates and siblings as well. The effect is not only immediate but lasting.\r\n\r\nBeyond the classroom, your contribution strengthens the larger community. When students feel supported, valued, and equipped to learn, they are more likely to share that energy with others. They go home excited to talk about what they learned. They begin to picture themselves as future leaders, creators, and problem solvers. Education does not stop at the school gates—it echoes through families, neighborhoods, and ultimately, our society. By supporting students today, you are investing in a brighter tomorrow for everyone.\r\n\r\nI also want to acknowledge the thoughtfulness that comes with giving. You chose to support education, knowing that your gift would not necessarily result in immediate recognition or visible returns. That kind of belief is powerful, and it gives teachers and students the encouragement to keep striving even when challenges arise.","fullyFundedDate":1742934999652,"projectUrl":"project/cozy-and-collaborative-area-rugs-for-en/9095295/","projectTitle":"Cozy and Collaborative: Area Rugs for Engaged Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Overstreet","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3279939_orig.jpg?crop=724,724,x25,y48&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1562514760185","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/fritsch4thgate"},{"teacherId":3279939,"projectId":9164726,"letterContent":"What a gift your generosity is.
