The technology in our Silent Is Golden project is designed to support learning, focus, and inclusion—especially for middle school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Intellectual Disabilities (IND).\r\n\r\nThe silent disco headphones funded through this project help students learn by reducing background noise and sensory overload. In a typical classroom, sounds such as conversations, hallway noise, and movement can be distracting or overwhelming for students with sensory sensitivities. These headphones allow students to hear instructions, music, or lessons clearly without being overstimulated. By controlling what they hear, students are better able to focus, process information, and remain engaged in learning activities.\r\n\r\nTeachers use the headphones to provide clear, direct instruction during lessons, small-group activities, and independent work. For example, students can listen to calming music during transitions, guided instructions during structured activities, or educational content at their own pace. This reduces anxiety, supports emotional regulation, and helps students stay on task longer than they would without this technology.\r\n\r\nThe headphones also support differentiated instruction. Some students need repetition, slower pacing, or alternative audio supports. With this technology, teachers can meet those individual needs without disrupting the rest of the class. Students gain more independence because they can listen and follow directions without constant adult prompting.\r\n\r\nIn addition to academic learning, the technology supports social-emotional growth. Students participate in structured movement, music-based activities, and celebrations in a way that is inclusive and comfortable for everyone. The \"silent\" aspect allows all students to engage together while maintaining a calm, organized environment. This is especially important for students who may avoid group activities due to noise sensitivity.\r\n\r\nThe technology also promotes positive behavior and motivation. Students associate the headphones with success, focus, and reward-based learning experiences. This helps increase participation, improve behavior during instruction, and create a positive connection to school.","fullyFundedDate":1760693793833,"projectUrl":"project/silent-is-golden/9585356/","projectTitle":"Silent is Golden","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Broadhurst","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1960795_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1485443582276","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/broadhurst"},{"teacherId":1960795,"projectId":9703964,"letterContent":"The Rockin' Robots & Music Makers: STEM Creativity in Motion project has had a meaningful and positive impact on my middle school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Intellectual Disabilities (IND) by making STEM learning accessible, engaging, and inclusive. This project provided hands-on opportunities for students to explore robotics, basic coding, and music creation in structured, supportive ways that align with their individual learning needs.\r\n\r\nMany students with ASD and IND benefit from predictable routines, visual cues, and immediate feedback. The robotics and music materials allowed students to see clear cause-and-effect relationships, which increased engagement, attention, and motivation. Students were able to follow step-by-step directions, practice sequencing, and complete tasks with a clear goal, resulting in improved on-task behavior and participation.\r\n\r\nThis project supported the development of foundational STEM skills such as problem-solving, logical thinking, and pattern recognition. Programming robots and creating musical patterns helped students strengthen executive functioning skills, including planning, organization, and persistence. Activities were easily differentiated, allowing each student to work at their own level and experience success, which is critical for building confidence and independence.\r\n\r\nSocial skill development was a key outcome of this project. Students worked in small groups to practice turn-taking, communication, and collaboration. For students with ASD, shared activities centered around robots and music provided natural, low-pressure opportunities for peer interaction. These experiences helped students build social connections, reduce anxiety during group work, and improve cooperation in a supportive classroom environment.\r\n\r\nThe multisensory nature of the project also supported emotional regulation and sensory needs. Music-making offered a calming and motivating outlet, while hands-on robotics provided purposeful tactile engagement. These elements helped reduce frustration, increase frustration tolerance, and support positive behavior throughout instructional time.\r\n\r\nPerhaps most importantly, Rockin' Robots & Music Makers helped students see themselves as capable learners. Completing a robot sequence or creating a musical pattern gave students a sense of pride and accomplishment. Students who often struggle with traditional academic tasks were able to demonstrate strengths through creativity and technology.\r\n\r\nThe materials from this project will continue to support current and future students with ASD and IND, creating lasting opportunities for meaningful, engaging STEM learning. These new resources have turned our writing lessons into hands-on experiences where students can bring their imagination to life.\r\n\r\nOne special moment happened during our first \"book-making day.\" As soon as the students saw the Cricut cutting out colorful titles, shapes, and borders for their book covers, the room filled with oohs and wows. Several students said, \"This looks like a real book!\" For many of them, this was the first time they had ever created something that felt truly professional and personal. Their pride was priceless.\r\n\r\nThe color printer has allowed students to print illustrations, diagrams, character designs, and backgrounds to include in their stories. Thank you for believing in them and in the work, we do each day. Your support has made an immediate and meaningful difference in our classroom, and I'm excited to share how your contribution is already creating positive changes.\r\nWhen the supplies arrived, my students could hardly contain their excitement. Many of them have never had their own set of materials that they can count on every day. As we unpacked the boxes together, the room filled with gasps, smiles, and curious hands reaching out to explore everything. Several students asked, \"Are these really for us?\" and their faces lit up when I told them that yes, these supplies were theirs to use all year long. That moment alone spoke volumes about how much this project meant to them.\r\nThe organizational tools you funded: highlighters, composition notebooks, dry erase boards and markers, have already transformed the way we structure our daily routines. Students who previously struggled to keep track of assignments now have clear places to store their work\r\nOne moment that stood out was during our first \"organization day,\" where students practiced sorting papers, highlighting important things that stood out in a text, and using the dry erase boards and markers to create rough drafts and write down difficult words to look up. A student who usually feels overwhelmed by transitions quietly said, \"This makes it so much easier. I feel like I can keep up this time.\" The relief in that statement reminded me how essential these supplies are not just for academic success, but for confidence, stability, and emotional well-being.\r\nWith the new materials, students are participating more actively in lessons. They come to class prepared, ready to take notes, complete activities, and track their progress. Our classroom feels calmer, more structured, and more focused.\r\nYour gift also sends a powerful message to my students: that people outside our classroom believe in them and want to support their learning. This encouragement has motivated them to take pride in their work and to treat their materials with care. They know that these resources were made possible by someone who chose to invest in their education, and that sense of being valued means more than you can imagine.\r\nThank you for giving my students the chance to feel organized, prepared, and capable. Your kindness has created a learning environment where they can thrive, and that impact will last far beyond this school year.
