The supplies funded by this project upgraded our world with color, extending what we accomplished at the end of the 2025/26 school year and fueling a strong start to this one. Having spent months building drawing skills in graphite and charcoal, my Art 1 students discovered a whole new vocabulary in water-soluble oil pastels, tempera cakes, and watercolor crayons. Because these media are water-based, even hesitant students felt safe experimenting — a swipe of a wet brush turns a pastel line into a wash, and \"mistakes\" become discoveries.\r\n\r\nOne moment from our Mask Identity project captures what your generosity made possible. Students explored who they are and who they present to the world, layering pastel, marker, and crayon on heavyweight cardstock and paper-pulp mask forms. One young artist went far beyond the assignment: alongside her painted mask study, she built a papier-mâché mask from scratch, extending it with attached hair pieces and painted fringes — a truly sculptural self-portrait. Ambition like that requires materials worth reaching for, and when students see rich pigments on the cart instead of dried-out leftovers, they raise their standards to match. She did exactly that.\r\n\r\nNext, we move into resist techniques and collage, combining wax crayons with transparent watercolor washes — lessons that bridge traditional craft with the mixed-media language of street art and graphic design my students already speak.
