We live in a rural community where there is not a lot of emphasis on education and a tax increase toward the school was voted against twice. Because of this, there have been quite a few budget cuts, but donations like yours make a huge difference and keep our classrooms running. \r\n\r\nI try to expose my students to a bit of diversity in our reading as well as applying real-life topics that students can use long after graduation. In this particular unit, we use literature to express social and political issues. We look at a collection of allegories and analyze how fiction portrays public and societal concerns. Then, we take it a step further and students choose their own issue to construct an original allegory. In this process, I felt that it was very important for students to understand how humor and story telling is used to change the world around them. I want them to understand that they also have a voice and are capable of making this change. Throughout the course of the unit, we hit Missouri Learning Standards regarding citing evidence, identifying theme, writing skills, and revision. \r\n\r\nThe Lorax is a big hit with students. They really enjoy starting with something familiar and low-risk, meaning they don't have a hard time reading it. Even though students know the story, many of them have never truly analyzed what it might stand for. We take the time to dissect each character and the plot to understand the symbolism behind the book. Even though they are high school, they still enjoy the colors and images as well. Many of the students appreciate the layers of the text. \r\n\r\nThank you again for donating to our small school.
