Students will use the microphones to create a radio advertisement using rhetorical tools we discuss in class. Prior to the assessment, students learn the importance of speaking skills with Martin Luther King's, "I have a dream" speech and an excerpt from Frederick Douglas' personal narrative. Students understand that using rhetorical tools can assist them in getting a point across and persuading others. They practice using these same tools to create a radio advertisement and persuade an audience to buy their product. This assessment reaches Missouri Learning Standards 9-10.RL.2.C: Analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices and syntax on meaning and tone, and 9-10.W.2.A: Follow a writing process to produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, style, and voice are appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience; self-select and blend (when appropriate) previously learned narrative, expository, and argumentative writing techniques will be assessed.
