The engagement in our independent reading program has increased and students have taken a more active role in selecting and recommending text, which has helped with their ability to draw connections when tackling unit text.\r\n\r\nAs long as I've been teaching, I've been encouraging my students to read more than classroom text. I align my units with independent reading projects, but getting full student engagement and participation is usually a bit like pulling teeth. With a small collection of texts, many from when or before I was in high school, it can be hard for students to find books that can hold their interest enough for them to see the value in struggling through reading difficulties. Having these new books has truly sparked new life in the program.\r\n\r\nAt the beginning of class students have a short block of independent reading (30 minutes on long days, 15 on short). The first day, they had the opportunity to shop the text, look at the covers, read the summaries. After reviewing a few texts' first chapters, they selected the text they wanted to read. Since that day, I've not only had student show excitement for that class time, but a few students have approached me about borrowing books to continue reading at home, and student discussion has become an active and lively time in class, versus the typically sparse statements swallowed in waves of silence. Last week, a student from my first period. came to me and set up a borrow schedule so he could come and grab the book for extra reading time when I wasn't running class. He now comes by right before lunch to pick up his novel and drops it off before my last class of the day starts. Seeing this student who typically has to be dragged through reading in class take an active interest in a novel, so much that he wants to spend more time with it during the day, has been amazing and fulfilling to see. And that is in part due to your contributions. Thank you.","fullyFundedDate":1761699311565,"projectUrl":"project/brick-by-brick-a-library-for-our-future/9862430/","projectTitle":"Brick by Brick: A Library for Our Future","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Flowers","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10334755"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_108136","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":289,"numTeachers":17,"percentFrplEligible":41,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":78,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 10","studentTeacherRatio":"17.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":60.0,"schoolId":108136,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Early College High School at Delaware State University on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Early College High School at Delaware State University","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/delaware/delaware-department-of-education/early-college-high-school-delaware-univ/108136"}
